School Profile:

Sidcot School is a co-educational independent school in Somerset, South West England. It is 15 miles from the city of Bristol and within one hour’s travel of Bath. Bristol International airport is only 7 miles away. Sidcot School is one of the oldest co-educational boarding schools in the UK.

As a Quaker School, Sidcot School embraces the value of fairness and harmony and the culture is friendly. One of the traditions that shows the supportive nature of the school is silent worship. For many centuries Quakers have been meeting for silent worship. People come together to sit. There is no ritual or prayer, and no hierarchy in the meeting. At the school, we meet in this way each week. Everyone at the school, students and staff, comes together in the Meeting House to sit for a period of 20 minutes in friendly and supportive silence.

Academic Success:

The aim of Sidcot School is to become a pioneer and a world-class centre of excellence for inspirational education that is as much about nurturing the spirit as it is about outstanding academic success. The school has some of the strongest results in the South West. In 2019, 34% of A-Level grades are A* to A which is above the national passing rate. The school also offers IB diploma and the mean score is32. For IB diploma, approximately Sidcot ranked 20 among the schools of similar size. 84% of their leavers were successful in gaining a place at university and 43% of them are going to the Russell Group Universities. They have a full time careers advisor who works with Senior School students in groups and on a one-to-one basis to support long term choices and decision making. External speakers are also regularly invited to offer students the benefit of their experience and extensive UCAS support is provided to students applying to UK universities, with additional support for those applying overseas. The school accepts students with special education need (SEN) and is highly experienced in providing support to students with mild to moderate learning support needs. An Individual Education Plan (IEP) will identify learning goals and outcomes to be achieved by them, along with appropriate learning support strategies.

Boarding and Pastoral Care for students:

The facilities in each of the five boarding houses are broadly similar. A Housemaster or Housemistress is responsible for looking after the students’ welfare. Boarding provides students with the space to focus on their work, whilst also giving them the chance to get involved in a wide range of extra curricular activities that might not be practical whilst living at home. The school has its own Health Centre staffed by a team of highly experienced nurses. The local doctors hold surgeries at the school twice a week and students can choose to see a male or female doctor.

Extracurricular Activities:

Sidcot School has an excellent rural location and top class facilities for sport, arts, crafts and environmental studies, as well as links with local community groups, charities and business. The creative arts centre, music school and drama department are well-equipped with the latest technology and facilities such as performance hall and studio. With over 100 extra-curricular activities ranging from archery to trampolining, maths club to hill walking, they make sure students have plenty of opportunities to try new things as well as developing existing interests. A whole range of sports are on offer and it includes some more unusual activities like circus skills . In the Sports Centre students have use of a superb 25 metre indoor heated pool, a multi gym, sports hall and squash court. There’s plenty going on outside school too, with field trips, gallery and museum visits, international exchanges, music tours, lectures and sports fixtures, also available to students.
